Flying with: Foundational Writing Skills
On-Demand Workshop Recording
Posture before pencil pressure!
Strong writing starts long before children pick up a pencil. Before we worry about pencil grip, letter formation and getting children to sit at the writing table, we need to look at what comes first: balance, core strength, shoulder stability, hand strength, fine motor control, language, confidence and meaningful reasons to write.
In this practical, play-filled workshop, we explore how to build the physical foundations children need to become confident little writers, from the ground up.
This workshop will help you understand what might be sitting underneath writing struggles and give you simple, practical ideas to support children through movement, play, provision and purposeful mark making.
Inside the workshop, we look at:
✅ Postural control and why it matters for writing
✅ Core strength, balance, climbing, crawling and whole-body movement
✅ Shoulder stability and big arm movements
✅ Fine motor control without boring worksheet energy
✅ Pinch grip, hand strength, pencil grip and scissor skills
✅ Indoor and outdoor provision that supports writing readiness
✅ Masking Tape Movers and simple movement ideas with big impact
You will also receive supporting resources, including planning documents and practical ideas to help you take the workshop straight into your classroom, outdoor area and provision.
Perfect for EYFS, Nursery, Reception, Year 1 transition, early years leaders, teachers and teaching assistants who want to support writing readiness in a way that is playful, purposeful and developmentally appropriate.
This is not about delaying writing.
This is about building the foundations that help children become confident writers.
